I think it will only put readers off who are tired of the same schtick being true for other MC they read (like you are for Anita). I didn't have that idea going in, having not read any AB books, or Twilight, or really any books where "all girls/women hate me waaaaaaaambulance call!" so that didn't stick out. What did stick out for me, personally, was the abandonment issues (I'm adopted) and the idea of feeling ostracized by an entire community for feeling different (I picked them up in high school, which is when all teenage girls feel Different and Unwanted and Ostracized, etc). But I also really liked how she described her werewolves. I like wolfish werewolves. And after the horrific bald thing in the third Harry Potter movie, it was a good refreshing change.

Plus, these books were my first intro into any kind of a Native American spin on urban paranormal fantasy, so that was cool and new to me, too. Even if it doesn't play a huge role until later.

Edit: Oh, it never really comes out because these books are mostly Mercy's POV. You have to read between the lines to notice it. But Bran, and a couple other characters, often argue that Mercy was taking things the wrong way. And point out that she was a little sensitive. She just ends up with better relations now that she is older and doesn't live up with the pack, too. But no one is outright hostile towards her except Leah. Basically Mercy had some growing up to do, and did so.
