The food is "croissants, various cheeses, and fruit. <-- This whole food thing is just another instance of Anita being a thoughtless, ungrateful asshole. Someone, here Damien, has yet again gone to some troubl to take care of her, make her life easier, and help her fulfill her self-imposed duties and she spits on their efforts, kindness, and general self-ness.

Damian explains to her... <-- He has to explain this to her multiple times in EVERY BOOK. At this point, I think he's just made a recording of himself explaining it and keeps in a pocket for later playback to Anita, especially since it's bound to come up again.

because god forbid anyone have any physical imperfections that aren't Asher-style dramatic-overscarring Phantom of the Opera angst <-- I actually thought that there was going to be a plot connected to this, like Belle Mort having sent fake Inquisitioners to kill Julianna and scar him for life because he chose another woman over her, left her, and took the young and impressionable JC with him. And JC's mother's illness was instigated by her to get him to leave at the opportune moment and be spared. I thought this as a teen because it seemed ridiculous to me that in a world where everyone has always known about vampires someone -- ANYONE -- would mistake a vampire for a bewitched human.

...Clearly I was wrong and she'd just wanted Le Phantom. Interestingly, however, the character is STILL difficult.

"try to stop taking so much energy from you" <-- I find it interesting that Nathaniel can control this and Anita can't. It implies that EVERYONE IS WORKING ON THEIR CONTROL BUT HER. Maybe in that previous book, it wasn't ANITA controlling her powers so much as NATHANIEL doing it for her. Sort of like Damien controls her mood swings. Wow, that is a disturbing and creepy supposition.

Damian tells her to eat a certain amount and then she can have coffee. <-- He is treating her like a child. Normally, I'd find that highly enraging but I can see his point... and his perspective. Anita's snide, skeeivily sexual commentary isn't warranted.

You're risking not healing Nathaniel and/or the very life energy of yourself and Anita because Miss Priss doesn't want to eat meat right now? <-- The man has learned how to pick his battles. Plus, I'm not convinced that he cares so much about Nathaniel or Anita's well-being provided that they don't drag him down with them.

but she ends up asking for coffee only "two strawberries and half a croissant later." <-- she doesn't want to get fat. I distinctly remember her worry A LOT about that in earlier books. Which makes sense since she looks down on fat women as well as slim and small breasted ones.

WHAT THE FLIP DOES MICAH DO FOR A LIVING? <-- Micah runs Anita's were-animal coalition. His job is to be the "central government" of the were-animals in St. Louis. Of course, it's a government of two -- himself and Anita -- so it's more of a monarchy and less of a democracy, which is what Anita keeps mistaking it for. (Anita and LKH fail civics and government classes FOREVER!) The idea of him going on 'business trips' is skeezy and alarming when one factors in his absolute control over the other groups/were-animals. (I know it'd be a TOTAL abuse of his powers and probably rape - but dud, he's a rapist so that shouldn't be surprising -- and completely repugnant, but I'd LOVE it if he was getting some on the side. And Anita, with her calm and understanding demeanor, found out. Except, she'd probably punish the lady/man/victim and not Micah and that would be terrible all around.)

Like, it's nice that LKH has thought up these little details about the Circus, it really is <-- BUT she peppers them in at ALL THE WRONG MOMENTS. Also, it's illegal to force people to rent an apartment without heat and running water, among other things. I strongly suspect that there wouldn't be half so many people living in JC's cold, drafty caves if the living standard is below what they're assured in even the crappiest apartment with a shared communal bathroom. There's GOT to be more than ONE kitchen.

Even coffee has to be talked about sexually. <-- It's a proven fact that she's got a one track mind.
