Though Richard isn't meant to be biased so much as totally ignorant that trans people even exist, which I got from how his conclusion in NiC was "A man was able to get pregnant? Well, he must be a hermaphrodite!" since it was Richard that told Anita that and since he used the language of a biology teacher, which he is, rather than the term for HUMANS with ambiguous physical sex, which is intersexual (though I know of some intersex folks who are fine with or even prefer the term hermaphrodite), suggesting he doesn't know much about sex and gender issues in general. So he's meant to be read more as just totally clueless, and JC doesn't want to waste time explaining it to him when it's of pretty much zero importance to the issue at hand.
Anita, I'm sure, would paint him as being a huge bigot while lauding herself for being enlightened and tolerance...as she proceeds to be a bigger asshole about it than he ever approached.
