she doesn't want to take the chance of getting Damian killed because it might kill Nathaniel. Poor Damian and Nicky. They know exactly what their lives are worth to their 'master'. I understand valuing some lives over other but they're supposed to be as close to Anita as Nathaniel is, even if the nature of their relationship with her is different. And, since she's deliberately gone out of their way to make them utterly dependent on her, Anita actually does owe it to them to be especially caring as to their well-being. The one time that she genuinely owes something to someone, Anita refuses to honor her self-imposed obligations.
They're hoping it won't get reported to the police because it would be hard to explain bloodstains It's going to get reported to the police. Richard lives in the suburbs, not the country. People are going to notice gunshots, a horrific car wreck, and a pair of guys hunting some crawling guy through the streets. And Richard really SHOULD tell on his would-be murderers, if only to protect their future victims.
"Again, playing Clark Kent was a problem for our furry Superman." LEAVE SUPERMAN OUT OF THIS AWFUL DRECK! SUPERMAN IS AWESOME!
She spends two paragraphs talking about what Asher's office looks like and how it's very plain I'm actually very impressed that Asher's office is so plain because JC's aesthetic is so all-encompassingly tacky. Anita once described JC's office (at Guilty Pleasures, I think... but it could've been the Circus) and it sounded like hell's tackiest bordello. If anything, Asher probably removed stuff to get the professional, minimalistic look that he was going for. The "sad plainness" of Asher's office is very much the piece of himself that he's added to the room. (And I like what he's done with the office, by the way.)
"the weretigers... were... somehow unwordly, as if they'd only recently been let out of their cages." Something awful is going to happen to all of these hot blond(e)s, isn't it? Anita/LKH doesn't portray these people as being kept property as reprehensible, morally, socially, or ethically. Instead, she implies that, because they have been kept in cages and only recently released, they are now "unworldly", which is implied to be a positive attribute that was gained only through their unwilling imprisonment.
"I didn't feel the need to explain he was my Bride and couldn't repeat anything we said unless I told him I could." This Bride/Man thing between Anita and Nicky sounds a lot like those religious zealots' marriages - you know, the ones between an older man and a very young, often uneducated girl who is generally given to him by her (often poor) family. This ugly dynamic shows up all over the world, including the U.S. The "head of the family" has absolute control over their "bride/wife" and their life, all of their social interactions, and usually even their continued existence. The woman isn't supposed to have thoughts or free will of her own... like Nicky.
I wonder if this is just regular AB repetition, or if LKH likes to linger on this fact particularly? I think it's a LKH Thing because she's been repeating shades of this dynamic throughout both this series and the one about the fairy princess (if the reports I've read on Lashouts are true.)
"I trust you with the pretty kittens." Aside from the fact that Jake is no more respectful to the tigers than Anita is, the whole bit about 'pretty kittens' sounds fetishistic. It's alsp what bad fanfic writers use to denote a M/f relationship, for example in torrid Buffy/Spike fics. Also, AHAHAHA!! No one's safe with Anita. She's the biggest monster there.
