Maybe that's why the rats work for the Circus--containment. If they're such great guards, not to mention possessing ratty senses, they can spot Incoming Ardeur better than anyone and get everyone out of the building.

Sounds reasonable to me! As for range, I think that's basically so far been as the plot demands.
