I think that's why she made Anita half-Mexican, but without any aspects of culture, lifestyle, or practicalities. She's exotic enough to be cool and interesting to appeal to LKH's tastes, and she can blame the evil stepmother for making Anita white, out of dislike for her poor deceased mother. That's how I read it, anyway.
