Yeah, while I've known a few gay men who called their significant other their girlfriend/wife, it was because they were working in a field in a part of the U.S. where they'd lose their jobs for being out of the closet. They wanted to talk over lunch about their personal lives, like everyone else, but they didn't want to be fired. And I could respect that. But, if you knew them well, they called their significant others either gender neutral terms or the masculine half of the relationship terms.

I don't want to get your hopes up. Like I said, I'd only read the one, awful book. Although, judging from what someone said further up-thread, there's probably more than enough rage-fuel scattered throughout the series to fill your needs.
