A lack of windows is actually a terrible thing for longterm patients. Due to construction issues my dad spent three weeks in a windowless cubicle of the basement of the hospital, and he went into full-on delirium. That whole month is a loss to him; he remembers almost none of it. The orderlies would wheel him over to a window for about a half hour a day but it wasn't enough. He didn't start to really heal until we got him out.
Sometimes I don't eat when I'm hungry as a control thing since my body is out of my control in a few painful ways. It's not healthy but I can't always help myself. But I don't have many people whose lives depend on me eating. I don't have people who would get raped if I don't eat. I also don't have anyone bringing me plates of tasty croissants, cheese, and fruit.
