Yes, it bothers me when that happens in other media as well. It’s an expansion of the Woman of Ice trope. Sure, we’ll *tell* you that this matriarchy is strong and confident, just to pretend that we’re feminist, but then we’ll quickly show how corrupt and/or stupid and/or incompetent the female leaders are and unwittingly shoot ourselves in the foot.

Ugh, agreed. It's not that I think a matriarchy would be perfect or without problems, no more so than a patriarchy, and of course one gender ruling isn't right no matter which one it is, but for all their flaws in terms of equality and social justice there are many, many patriarchies that were and are strong and still flourishing, powerful men within them who did great things, etc., so shouldn't the same hold true for a matriarchy? Especially one as ancient as the tigers, clearly the women were doing something right! And yet nope they're all totally ineffectual compared to both Anita and their own men so far. Which is, ironically, a positively patriarchal idea.

Because anger is cool and awesome and hardcore whereas all of those other emotions like sadness and compassion are for wimps.
Ugh, hate this.

Anita has none of these dietary restrictions. So, why is she being such a petulant brat?
No clue. When you phrase it like that with the Hindus and Muslims and what, it just becomes even more jaw-droppingly awful on her part.

If LKH had any idea how ridiculous a lot of things sounded, this book series would not exist as we know it.
