BULLET, CHAPTER 38, PART TWO
Anita asks Nathaniel how he can just forget about everything that's just happened. He says "I won't forget, but we need to make this city, this territory, as safe as possible" for some reason he doesn't also mention the SAVE THE USA FROM MOAD bit "that means we need the tigers, Anita. We need for you and Jean-Claude to be the Master of Tigers." Ahahahah, as if JC is going to be getting any part of that title. Anita says she doesn't know if she can do that, Nathaniel says just go make nice with the weretigers that Micah picked and don't worry. She says that she thinks she can have sex with them "but it's the idea of keeping them. They're strangers, and suddenly they get to be in bed with us, too." Ugh, fucking comma abuse again. Also, they 'get' to? Like it's such a fucking privilege that they even want? Also, her issue with that is because "I'm not getting enough alone time with you and Micah as it is."
Just in case the fact THEY'RE JON AND THEREFORE THE BEST/FAVORITES wasn't obvious enough.
Nathaniel agrees that he misses it being just the three of them (was it ever just the three of them...? Wasn't JC at least always in the picture too? And Jason and Asher?) and Nicky asks if his feelings should be hurt by that. Anita answers "Yes, they should be, but they aren't, are they?" and Nicky says "No, because my primary drive is for you to be happy. Micah and Nathaniel make you happy." Anita asks if he's allowed to work for his own happiness, he placidly says he doesn't think that's what Brides are for, she asks what are they for, he says "Cannon fodder, unquestioning obedience, I don't know." I don't know why, but this prompts her to bring up that he was afraid of what she did to Jamil and Shang-Da. He says yeah it scared him, she asks if he'd have to obey if she'd wanted to do the same to him. Nicky says "I think I'd let you do anything you wanted to me, but I'd rather not." It shocks me that the poor guy even has the capacity for the 'rather' bit. He then goes on to talk about how good the power felt when she shared it but that, obviously, he "wouldn't want to be the wereanimal you were sucking energy off of." As opposed to sucking something else.
Dino asks if that's "where all the energy came from" earlier, she nods, Stephen says it was even more powerful than when she shares the ardeur, Anita says that's because she wasn't just feeding off sex, she was feeding off their lives. Nicky asks if they understood what they were volunteering for. GOOD QUESTION, BUT WAY TOO LATE. Nathaniel said that they offered to save their Ulfric, which is not an answer, and Stephen adds that as Skoll and Hati they're supposed to be willing to give their lives for their Ulfric, which is also not an answer and just sounds like a way of saying there's no way Anita could be in the wrong...nevermind that this shouldn't be the issue, since obviously they knew what they were volunteering for since they specifically told her to do what she did to Chimera. No, the issue is that after healing Richard, she spread it around some more instead of giving it back to them like she should have! Which is probably why "I don't think they'll want me to feed from them again". Fucking duh, Anita.
Nicky says an equally fucking-duh statement that they were afraid of her. Anita says her allies shouldn't be afraid of her...yeah right, look what she did to Rafael, Donovan, Joseph, and Haven! Whereas all she did to Vittorio was boob-rub on him. Her allies honestly have more to fear from her than her enemies! And then Dino quotes Machiavelli about love and fear. I HEREBY REVOKE THAT QUOTE FROM LKH. It has come up EVERY BOOK so far I think, or at least way too many. She never quotes anything else from him either. I am 100% sure it is the only one she knows and it is getting tiresome and obnoxious. Anita says she didn't know he read Machiavelli, Dino says he was an interesting guy, Anita says "that's one way of putting it" but that "when you start quoting Machiavelli to justify your actions, you have ceased to be one of the good guys."
Firstly, you obviously don't know shit about what The Prince actually says. Secondly, I really hate how everyone talks about good guys and bad guys like very real, concrete divisions when it just doesn't fit this world at all: Richard killed and ate another human being so that he could protect the Pack from Raina, the wererats do mercenary work, and the current plan to save the world from MOAD involves fucking weretigers whose consent is questionable and have been bred like farm animals for that specific purpose and forcibly taking away the autonomy of every Master of the City in the USA (yeah, remember JC's plot? What happened to that?). I don't mind everyone being shades of gray. I like it. But I don't like it when gray is being called white instead of gray like it is. (Of course, Anita goes straight into pitch-black territory...)
Dino says "No, quoting Nietzsche does that. Machiavelli is just cool." Luckily Nathaniel decides to stop this conversation before LKH can bungle, mutilate, and misunderstand some more philosophy by telling Anita to "Just go meet the weretigers, Anita, no strings, no expectations. Just meet them and we'll go from there." She says that sounds fair, he starts to say "But..." while smiling, she shrugs and says let's do this, and then Dino, dammit, decides we need to be slowed down some more by saying that "You're feeling all monster because you killed Haven." DAMMIT, DINO, WE HAD ALMOST GOTTEN HER MOVING! Also, 'all monster', in addition to sounding awkward, also really isn't a term that you'd think an actual monster would use to mean terrible, a murderer, etc.
Anita says she hadn't thought that, he says she had, and she says that his "big, dark face had way too much going on in the eyes" and how his being "so big and so much muscle" made her forget that "there was a good mind in all that heavy packaging." Because physically strong people are never smart, right? Plus he's just a wererat grunt, since when do THEY think, eh?
Anita says that it's not that she killed Haven but that she was able to look him in the eyes the same as she did during sex with him and still pull the trigger and "How could I do that? How could anyone do that and not be a monster?" Of all the things that actually DO make Anita a monster, I for one don't even consider this to be on the list. Nathaniel puts his arms around her of course, and Nicky says that "I could have done it, but we all know without your control, I'm a sociopath, so that isn't comforting."
1) Then why say it, if your main drive is Anita's happiness?

Dino says that he might hesitate if it was a woman, but that he could do if she had a gun. Gregory and Stephen say guns aren't their thing so don't ask them, which I think is missing the point. Nathaniel says he couldn't kill someone he loved but that he'd kill to protect someone he loved (hahahah I doubt it) and "that's what you did, Anita" and kisses her and tells her how she protected him gag-gag-gag. Dino tells her that there were guards all over the place "and any of them would have done it for you. It wouldn't have cost any of them this pain." Anita replies that "That's why it had to be me. It was supposed to matter. It was supposed to hurt." Uh, I think actually it was more that, if I recall right, he had a gun and was about to fire, Anita had to shoot him right that second or else. She didn't have TIME to choose whether she should call a guard or not. It wasn't a matter of her making this deep it-has-to-be-me decision at all, where is this coming from?
Dino asks if wasn't Anita raised Catholic, she's like yeah why, he says oh nothing and then says the Nietzsche quote about "Is it better to outmonster the monster or be quietly devoured?" Anita gives her favorite response ("What?") and he says answer. She lays her head against Nathaniel's chest and he cradles it and she hugs him and then says she wouldn't be quietly devoured. Dino says so you vote monster then, Anita says yes if there are only two choices. Oh Anita, we knew this LONG ago. Dino, Nathaniel, and everyone else in the kitchen agrees with them, probably because no one dares voice an opinion different than Anita's to her face. Also, Nathaniel saying that's what he'd choose is hilarious since his whole point and past has been about being quietly devoured, most recently by Anita herself. Dino says that "Haven picked on Travis and Noel because they let him devour them slowly."
No, it's been established that he picked on them firstly because that's how werelions roll and because he thought Anita was boning them more than she was him. AND WAY TO BLAME THE VICTIMS THERE, DINO! Nicky joins in on the victim-blaming by saying "They weren't good enough monsters" and Anita's only objection is that "Travis is still alive; don't talk about him in the past tense." Dino says if he wants to stay alive "he needs to get better at fighting back." NO, ANITA NEEDS TO STEP UP TO HER ROLE AS REGINA AND START PROTECTING HER PEOPLE. "Can I order him to start going to the training session?" ANITA, THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT. Nicky tells her she's Regina, there's no Rex, so she can order Travis to do anything. This some sick shit; there's all this talk about how these 'good' leaders are supposed to protect their people and she's been moaning about how she failed the lions...yet the responsibility to protect themselves is still falling on the shoulders of the victim, and Anita's only role as Regina is apparently that she just gets to order people around without actually doing anything for them in any way. Even some of the pretty bad monarchs and dictators in history have done better than that for the people they ruled!
"And there it as again, being in charge of someone's life to a point I didn't want." Okay, I understand why she can't just step down, given that we know from the past leaders that some truly nasty people might step up to take her place, but that doesn't excuse her just avoiding her responsibilities like she has been and clearly intends to continue doing."But Dino and Nicky were right; Travis had to learn how to defend himself better or find a pride that was a little less lionlike." So clearly she intends to change absolutely ZIP about how Haven ran the pride despite telling Haven herself that they're supposed to help and protect the weak members rather than beat them up (or let them be beaten up). Nathaniel tells her that Travis is safe here (no, he clearly isn't, since Anita has just said that if you get beaten/killed, that's your problem for not knowing how to fight back) so not to worry about him, and Anita somehow takes that as meaning "You really are okay with me adding more people to our bed." Out of all of them, Anita, of fucking course Nathaniel is going to be the one okay with you doing ANYTHING you want! Him and Nicky, but Nicky goes without saying, sadly.
Nathaniel grins and says he likes making new friends, she frowns (god, you can't win either way with her--either you can't share so you have to die, or you're happy about sharing and she doesn't like that either?) so he just kisses her and she kisses him back and can't frown about it. Anita asks, "You really are a little excited to meet them, aren't you?" and Nathaniel whispers to her about how he likes watching her with other people and she knows it. You know what, why bother whispering, everyone in this room is a wereanimal and therefore has super-hearing and knows exactly what you're saying, go ahead and make things awkward out loud, I'm sure it's not news to them. Anita asks if Micah likes watching (wouldn't she know by now?) and Nathaniel says Micah likes watching Nathaniel/Anita and JC/Anita and also that he likes Jason. Anita tells him that she just wants to sleep between them for "like a couple of days" and Nathaniel says they will when they get through this and she's like promise and he says promise and then she backs away and stands up straight and talks to the reader about how they will indeed do just that when all this was over.
I told you this was a pointless chapter.
