One thought on that is that the West Pennine Moors are bleak, desolate places (with the odd radar installation). You built your house in the valley, and posh houses just needed bigger valleys. That part of the world is quite resistant to change, and in some places any new buildings have to keep to the look of the area, so what you'll see in Google Maps is not that far off what was there then, though many of the old industrial buildings are gone.
