About the not holding her hand bit, you know, the Karltons could just be a family that is not touchy feely at all so thinking of holding her hand might not have occurred to them, or they might have thought she wouldn't necessarily want that. After finding out she did want that, heck, it still could very awkward for them so although the dad and the one brother tried, it just felt too weird.
