I think it might be the same reason there's such a rise in hate groups lately; it's backlash against the progress that's been made.
Yeah, the story is easily 2/3 done or more. This chapter ended on page 446, the book ends on page 626. So we've only got 220 pages to wrap this up. Which is a lot, granted, but there's been so much pointless filler that I feel like this is gonna end LKH-style, with a whole lot of meandering around and then everything smushed together at the end, possibly with a deus ex machina.
Petronia does matter in that she makes Quinn into a vampire (spoiler: it's by raping him because of-fucking-course -.- )
