Yeah, there's very much an escapism factor to romantic vampires like hers, and while I do enjoy that element---I enjoy decadent dilettante vampires, that's a big appeal for me--writers like her, LKH, and probably Meyer (I haven't read Twilight but that's the impression I get) take it too far. There might be lip service paid to the good things that have been left behind too, or how many new problems trying to live while dead would actually realistically present, but it ends up really being, as you pointed out, portrayed as a blessing no matter how much it might get claimed to be a curse. And, of course, the horror gets sucked out of it, and the horror is a huge part of the appeal for it as me. Like how Petronia is portrayed, she's the kind of vampire I enjoy, and I think what Lestat was like once too til Rice got too attached to him.
