My AB OCs: The Wererats
Oct. 13th, 2013 03:38 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
All three of them are human teenagers in my original urban (well, suburban) fantasy story, but for the purposes of AB roleplay I made them wererats who are in their early twenties, since that's in the age range most roleplay characters are (in my experience) and it lets them be independent from their parents, stay out late, go to bars, and generally have more opportunities to interact with others, as well as gives them time to have gotten their therianthropy under control (each of them contracted it at the same age that they are in my stories, which lets me remember it easily).
Max and Eva are easily among the nicest, most moral, and least flawed people of my cast, plus most of their problems are not their fault, but I think they're interesting and well-executed enough to not be Mary Sues so much as average protagonists, even with Max's above-average ass-kicking skills. Plus not everyone can be dark and gritty and fucked-up and gothitty, right? They also are really stereotypical for the respective spots on the LGBT spectrum they represent--butch lesbian who is good at mechanic and home repair, super-girly heterosexual transgender woman--but the problem with those particuliar stereotypes (not *all* stereotypes, mind you) isn't anything in themselves, but that they're used in a negative way, as a joke, or as all there is to the characters with those traits, and that's not the case with how I write Eva and Max
In my original stories, Max and Eva and MJ, along with another girl named Abigail, are the protagonists in one of my would-be novels (the one I'm working on right now) and they're basically kinda the Scooby Gang from Buffy---kids protecting their hometown from monsters. Not the most original setting, I grant, but I maintain that it isn't always the idea sometimes so much as what you do with it! Hell, LKH is proof of that *eyeroll* Anyway...my wererats, everybody!
Max Singh: Warm, sociable, fun, quick-witted, funny, talkative, and really super butch, Max is very tough and very stereotypically masculine but is definitely more like a "big brother" type than the equally stereotypical portrayal of the "mean man-hating bulldyke" she outwardly resembles. She's quite loyal to and protective of her friends, and very much has "hero" personality, because, well, that's what I intended her to be. She's also very rat-like in how resourceful she is, how quick she can think on her feet, and being a truly talented opportunist. Max is flexible, adaptable, and able to survive in almost any situation. No crisis or defeat is enough to take the tough likes of her down easy, and she’ll take on any challenge life can throw at her. Her positive attitude and ability to bounce back are two of her greatest strengths, and her best trait is probably what an awesome friend that she is.
She's very brave, very capable, and very much someone to stick up for those who are defenseless or in need of aid. Though never formerly trained, she's a rough-and-tumble kid who has been getting into fights all her life, and can hold her own pretty well with most opponents if guns aren't involved, assuming they're not kung-fu masters or something. In addition to fighting and being thrifty, her other skills include home repair and some car/motorcycle repair. She makes a living doing these, along with any other odd jobs like mowing lawns or delivering things, whatever really. Of course, you need training and a license to be a *real* repairmen or mechanic, which she doesn't have, so this is all under-the-table and technically illegal, but you can get her cheaper than the legit guys for the jobs that she can do (naturally, plenty of stuff is outside her realm of knowledge, because of said lack of official training). But she can't afford training, or the time off she'd have to take for it, so it's really a cycle unfortunately.
Her biggest flaws are her nosiness and greed. For the former, while her social skills are mostly really good, she does tend to ask a lot of questions when she's only just met someone, and dig more than she should, while also tending not to say a lot about herself, which can come off as suspiciously secretive and hypocritical. Max is the type to try to see if she can help out a person who looks like they might have problems, but she sometimes doesn’t know when to back off and leave it alone. As for the latter, she grew up poor, and still is, so she tends to pinch every penny, stretch every dollar, and hop on any chance to make a buck that she can. She'll do some pretty stupid/crazy things for money, though she is very much a moral person and has boundaries she won't cross. She lives life by her own rules, but they are decent ones. Despite her greed, she makes a genuine effort to earn to earn her meager living through honest, if often unorthodox, means (hence the aforementioned hodge-podge of odd jobs and under-the-table stuff).
In my original stories where she's human, she left home as a teenager due to a complex family situation, but her Anitaverse version ran away because she had become infected with therianthropy and didn't want to be a danger to her family while she was still new and uncontrolled, nor did she want to bring any public shame on them if the neighbors found out. Plus things were already tense with her stepfather due to the whole family situation thing mentioned and she figured this wouldn't help her mother out at all with it. She dropped contact with her mother and sister, whom she is very close to, during this time. She told herself that a clean break was to make sure she wouldn't be tempted to go back too soon, but actually it was because she was too afraid to know what they might think of her--a wererat, as an out lesbian, as a Sikh who cuts her hair short, just everything. She still is, and has yet to contact them again.
Looks-wise, Max is 5'8, of Punjabi heritage, has copper brown skin, dark brown eyes, and scruffy black hair cut very short' so it doesn't get tangled in machinery at work or get grabbed in a fight (it's against her faith as a Sikh to cut her hair, but she figures God might not mind if she has reasons like this aka her life might actually be at stake if she doesn't). In terms of her build and facial features, she looks shockingly like a leanly-muscled cis guy. This is added to by the fact she wears nothing but secondhand mens clothes, mainly a "working class" look (since, well, she is) with jeans, cargo pants, basic T-shirts and tanks, work boots, sneakers, and of course the classic lumberjack lesbian plaid shirts. Heck, even if she were to wear feminine clothes, she'd just look like a crossdressing guy. She's not *trying* to pass for male, she just naturally looks very manly and happens to prefer to dress like it too, but she doesn't care what gender people think she is or treat her as, and doesn't correct people when they think she's a guy since she's found it's more trouble than it's worth most of the time. Supernaturals can smell her sex right off, and sometimes this a good thing, sometimes not so much.
In roleplay, she's been the combat-oriented one in the group most of the time, like rescuing Hank from a haunted house filled with ghouls and moving her way up in the Rodere ranks towards an enforcer role, that kind of thing. She's also made a lot of connections due to her uber-social and friendly nature, namely with Hank, Aggie, and Odette, whom you've all met in SvS. Aggie, if I haven't mentioned it enough yet, is Cygnusrex's Edgar the weresnake, Aggie is a nickname that his friends call him by. Hank, writtenelision's wererat, started with a crush on both Max and Aggie, became friends with them both, and indeed became a couple with Aggie eventually, and all three of them are super-pals now who hang out and have wacky adventures and stuff. I decided to set SvS at the point where Hank is friends with Max, and Max is friends with Aggie, but Hank is still too nervous to approach Aggie (hence why he is still 'Edgar' to him and everyone but Max in SvS). Hopefully by the end of it they'll have become a couple like in RP, or at least Hank will have graduated to friendship status enough to have nickname privileges!
She is romantically involved with Odette, writtenelision's swanmane, though neither are exclusive with each other. They don't call it poly but I guess technically they are? IDK it's never come up, they're just totally cute and flirty and go on cute dates and also go on cute dates with other girls (except Detty does totally get jealous because she is very possessive of people she sees as being hers, romantically or otherwise) and Max is always getting chased out of her room at sword-point like Gaspard in a stereotypical 'over-protective dad vs boyfriend' scenario and it's hilarious.
Eva Isaachar: Super cute, plucky, compassionate, courageous, flirty, feminine, and, like Max, really friendly and sociable. She's very witty, even sassy, but she uses it for good, to cheer up others, not put them down, and she's very perky and bubbly alongside being clever and smart in both the street sense and the book sense. Talks a lot, CHATTY AS HELL actually, but can very much keep a secret and be a great listener. Because she's so girly and froofy and pink and adorable, a lot of people are inclined to miss that she is smart, and even more so not to expect her to be brave, but she's quite courageous, though she does have her insecurities, which are mostly centered around her being transgender. Speaking of that, while her femininity is 100% natural, she does feel some pressure nonetheless to be hyperfeminine in order to 'prove' that she is a 'real' girl, and likewise feels backlash at the same time for being so 'stereotypical' for a woman in general and especially a trans woman. It's complicated. Being a shifter complicates things further since other supernaturals can, as with Max, smell her biological sex, and the way that therians have super-healing and will also heal anything, even a missing limb, after shifting, means that a sex-change surgery is probably never going to be possible for her, since her body would treat that as a wound. Likewise for breast implants because of how they would move around inside her when she changed form, though luckily she can still home-grow a natural pair with hormones.
Ironically, she wouldn't have become infected with therianathropy if she hadn't been trans. She was born and raised in Miami, and was attacked as a teenager after she started presenting as a girl. A wererat in hybrid form rescued her and carried her to safety, but in the process of picking her up, it accidentally scratched her, and canon says that wererats are so infection that a scratch is all it takes with them. After that, her parents decided that it would be best to move, and picked NYC because they had family there. Eva joined the local Rodere, and became a mortuary cosmetologist, meaning she does the makeup for corpses at funerals. Like Max, she became friends with Hank through the Rodere, and he's been a really great person. For instance, you know how male rats have huuuge testicles (no, really, they're as big as their heads!) and, as we found out in the first book, this extends to wererats? Hank made her a pair of adorable flowery pink boxers to wear in rat form (he also made a pair of shorts for himself too, and anyone else who prefers to cover up while shifted). Also like Max, she's really close to Detty, and they're best friends. Detty actually crushes on Eva, and while Eva is straight, she's really flattered by the attention, and they're totally cute and girl besties together and Gaspard doesn't chase Eva off!
Eva is 5'6, has a slender bird-like build, and is mostly white with light tan brown skin, russet brown eyes, and mouse-brown hair in a cute choppy bob that goes to the base of her neck in the back. She dresses mostly in black/pink/white and pink/white/sky blue palettes, with a good bit of magenta and purple tones too. Mini-skirts, high-waisted shorts, swingy dresses, Peter Pan collars, two-tone shoes, Mary Janes, that kind of thing.
Oh, and she has a perfect little pet albino mouse named Magdalena that she carries around in her purse!
Michael Joeseph O'Daley: Mikey Joe is actually still sometimes played as a mundane human even on supernatural-themed boards, but I used his wererat version for SvS. If you don't recall him, don't feel bad---he's kinda supposed to not get noticed, especially since most of his quirks (awkwardness, geekery, etc.) are fulfilled by writtenelision's wererat Hank. He was never played at the AB RP board like Max and Eva, so my RP buddies are actually no more familiar with him than you guys!
Anyway. He's a quiet, sensitive sort, sometimes morose since, like Delilah and Sati, he's had issues with depression. He's not cutting himself or planning suicide or anything like that, but he often just seems to drift through life immersed in a dull gray haze. He's not unpleasant, but he is often apathetic and melancholy, and there's always a bit of strain to his smile, even when it's genuine--and it is always genuine, because he doesn't have the energy to waste on faking it. Animals help, though. MJ likes critters, which ties in to his career choice of becoming a veterinarian. He has a special fondness for rodents in particular (ahaha, also a common thing with my chars, I WONDER WHY), and he has four pet female mice that are named after the Romanov sisters (Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia--OTMA all together!). He's currently a vet student, but his biggest problem with his future job is how hard its going to be to put pets down, and he's not exactly fond of having to cut them open and study them. Besides animals, he also likes X-Men, old Pokemon games, long hot showers in the dark, folklore/myth/cryptids, reading, and lurking online.
As far as people go, he's kinda cynical/hopeless about humanity as a whole, but optimistic about people as individuals. He tends to rationalize and excuse the bad behavior or attitudes of others, especially if they're his friends, and while he is not exactly quick to forgive, does always get around to it eventually. Though his sorry set of social skills generally puts him in the “oblivious” or "awkward" category, Mikey Joe is, in his own way, a very sensitive boy in that he cares deeply about the feelings of other people, even those that he does not know that well. He makes it a point to ask others about their day, their life, themselves, just to give them the ego boost of knowing that someone else is interested, and while he is often guilty of talking too much about his own interests, he is also a very good listener to others as well. When someone, especially a friend, especially on a sensitive subject, disagrees with or offends him, he'll just shut up about the subject entirely. It’s not worth it to him. He doesn't want to argue, he'll just let them think what they want and he'll stew about it quietly. Conflict is just not his strong suit. He does not want to get angry himself, and he doesn’t want anyone else angry either. Anger is an actively toxic emotion to Mikey, and he does all he can to stay away from it in himself and in others. It makes him physically sick. He is much, much better at being sad, or hurt, or just nervous.
His role my novels originally just starts out as, like I said, one of a quartet of monster-fighting kids, but as the story goes on and theirs intersects with the Ruthven/Delilah/swans plot as it exist in my original universe, it gets eventually discovered that he's related to Delilah, the descendent of one of her relatives. He even has the same name as one of her cousins...specifically, the cousin whose name she used when disguised as a boy. More bizarre still, he looks EXACTLY like that cousin too. Is it reincarnation? Or coincidence? And what significance does it have, if any? DUN DUN DUN!
As for what he does look like, he's a very pale white boy with brown hair and blue eyes who stands at 5'10 and is skinny, but kinda flabby because he lacks any muscle tone or definition. Skinnyfat, I think it's called? Wears a lot of greys and blues, accented with black, as well as occasional other cool/dark/drab colors. T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, slip-ons or sneakers or boots, stripes. Needs a pair of black-framed glasses for his astigmatism.
Max and Eva are easily among the nicest, most moral, and least flawed people of my cast, plus most of their problems are not their fault, but I think they're interesting and well-executed enough to not be Mary Sues so much as average protagonists, even with Max's above-average ass-kicking skills. And Hank and Eva and the boxers. Because Hank is shy and embarassed and I AM NOT GOING OUT IN PUBLIC LIKE THIS! And of course he would help Eva! And Eva and Detty are the best life partners. Gaspard clearly approves of Eva. Lovely girl who is perfect for Detty!
And you *GASP* forgot Simon and his 'You are acceptable because rodent also I am a horrible person' thing.
