More About Anthony Blake

a_sporking_ratJust some notes so you can get to know dear Anthony Blake! Since, after all, why wouldn't you want to get to know a guy like him, eh?
You would not believe how many times I went "but this is unrealistic/doesn't make sense" and "but this is offensive to women AND men!" and then remembered THAT'S THE POINT AND THIS IS WHY THERE NEEDS TO BE PARODIES GALORE. Seriously, fucking awful as this all is...it honestly does fit, at least in my opinion, for what type of guy Anita would be if she got her wish and really was one.
- Originally I named him Antonio Flores because I figured Anita's Mexican mother would translate to his Mexican father, and Anita's mother's maiden name was Flores (we know this from her referring to Grandmother Flores vs Grandma Blake)...but then I decided that Anthony is in fact 100% "whitebread" as he would say, and just THINKS that he looks like he could be "mixed" because of his black hair and dark eyes. He thus will often pretend that he is and bring it up to people in attempts to gain sympathy. I feel this is a much more accurate mirror of how LKH treats Anita's bi-racial status and why she chose it.
- The national average height for men in the USA is 5'10. Anthony is 5'11, and considers himself a giant because of it. Oddly, everyone else does too, and both he and others will remark upon how tall he is.
- He has all the hate for blond men, and will talk a lot about how they're always cast in hero roles against darker-haired adversaries, how most women will always choose them first, how they are inevitably arrogant because of this, etc.
- Anita likes her men on the short side, feminine in some way, and often on the short side. I considered just flipping this and having Anthony like tomboyish women that are tall with short hair, but then I thought about it, and I think that while part of Anita's preferences are just from the common harmless bishi fetish, I also think part of it comes from her misogyny. She wants/needs her men 'feminized' in some way so she can feel superior as the 'man' in the relationship. Anthony is, as if you couldn't guess, misogynistic as fuck (though the way he manifests this might be different than the way Anita does, since it's not coming from a place of internalization) so I decided he's the same and demands petite stature and uber-feminity and long locks. Not that men who like these things are inherently sexists, just that with Anthony it's coming from the same nasty place as Anita. He himself does have long hair too, though. (ETA: A commenter from his first post suggested that his ladies might be taller instead so that he can pat himself on the back because who else would be good enough to love freaks who are supermodel-height, which is an idea I also like! Maybe I'll make some like that, some petite.)
- Just as Anita has huuuge but perfect and perky tits, so too do all of Anthony's harem, as well as hot-wet-tight vaginas like Anita does. Anthony, however, has the same ginormous dick-a-saurus that Micah does, and the same angst about how no girls before his supernatural harem could handle it. He may use this as his reasoning for why he doesn't do humans.
- All other men are immediately treated as competition. Anthony sees things in the same girl/guy binary as Anita, and, like Anita, sees the male side as superior, so any man he dubs as 'girly' in any way is mercilessly lambasted by him. The second he has reason to think that any guy is 'manlier' than he is, of course, he'll go on about what a macho dickheaded testosterone-poisoned prick they are and how he's glad he's not like that and how they give men a bad name and are also probably homophobic sexists UNLIKE HIM!
- In addition to believing himself the epitome of perfect machismo, he also believes himself to be VERY liberal and enlightened and modern while also a "gentleman"...none of which he is, of course. This is meant to mirror how tolerant and enlightened Anita sees herself as (which she isn't) while also maintaining that she has such a "small-town virgin" pure and moral mentality (which she also doesn't). And of course we all know she thinks she's the epitome of perfect machismo too, but that goes without saying
- Anita tends to immediately class other women as one or more of a certain set of female stereotypes: bitch, slut, crazy, insane, jealous, evil, victim, etc. Anthony is certainly misogynistic enough to do the same, but unlike Anita, he's not doing it out of any sense of competition with them or distinguishing himself as Not Like Other Girls, so there isn't quite as hateful, hypocritical, and catty an edge. I think with him it's more based on if he thinks he has a chance of fucking them or not/if he finds them attractive or not, versus 'are they prettier than me/could they steal my men' like with Anita. I'm sure he gets on-guard as fuck around any reasonably good-looking or competent guy, though. Jealousy, thy name is Blake.
- HE HAS TO BE THE MANLIEST MOST ACCOMPLISHED BADASS DUDE IN THE ROOM AND YOU HAVE TO KNOW IT
- He sees feminine women as weak, masculine women as gross (and, of course, any woman who is just competent and/or unimpressed with him is 'masculine')
- Gay is bad if it's two guys! Lesbianism is ok if it involves him! What? He's not homophobic, you're homophobic! And he has a submissive femme Asian boyfriend now too! (Anita gets a girl in the harem at the end of Bullet)
- Instead of Anita's "I'm a Good Girl, not a slut! I'd never have/enjoy sex like this if not for the ardeur/my beasts making me! And the guy is being forced to like it by the ardeur/his beast, so it's not like it's rape for him! But he's also really hot for me on his own because I'm so amazing and awesome too!" Anthony's Lad Doth Protest Too Much song and dance is "This poor ardeur-addled hot woman is throwing herself at me! She can't help herself! I am a gentleman and not a sex hound like other men, so I would never take advantage of this normally, but I have to because of the ardeur/my beasts! And she is a good woman who would never do this normally but she's overcome by lust and passion, which she ordinarily never would be except for me being so HOT! And the ardeur and beasts! She's only ever felt this way for me, of course, she isn't a slut, I'm just too awesome and amazing for any girl. And since the ardeur makes her like/want it, it's not rape!" Because like Anita, Anthony doesn't like "sluts" either. Much like a slut to Anita is any woman who does what Anita does (or just, you know, likes men at all), a slut to Anthony is any woman who does what Anita does with men who aren't Anthony/likes men who aren't Anthony.
- This morning I remembered the scene where not only is sexual slavery presented as a non-evil and necessary thing, Anita also thinks that men are just fine with it, since they're both sensible and yet also naturally sex-obsessed, while it's women who have silly hangups about it (which is presented as a BAD thing). I decided not to think about how this would translate with Anthony. I'M NOT GONNA AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME! But now the thought is in your head. You're welcome.
- Since Anita is stuck in the 80s fashion-wise while also attempting bad high-school goth, Anthony is too. Lot of stuff that a teen boy would think looks edgy and badass, a lot of stuff that could have been seen on Miami Vice. Basically, it's a hideous, hideous merging. Of course, once per book he'll be "forced" to get dressed up in formal eveningwear or fetish gear and gripe about it being all unmanly and metrosexual while pretending not to love the fact that ladies are all ogling how dapper and stylish and/or sexy he looks

3) They're women, and Anthony complains about reverse sexism and political correctness gone mad because how else could TWO women be on a police squad except for man-hating affirmative action, right? If this is the case, expect a lot of complaining from Anthony about how everyone thinks he must be a sexist asshole who can't do anything right just because he's a man and everything is now run by a bunch of feminazis...while being a sexist asshole who is totally incompetent, much like Anita is also a sexist and incompetent asshole who claims she's only seen that way because she's a girl and everything is run by sexist jerks! He is still likely convinced they want to screw him.
And if you think, as I frequently did, that this is just ridiculous and nobody could be this awful...just remember that Anita already is.

Yeah, Jade is the submissive China Doll fragile-flower stereotype, which I think might make her seem less 'gay' with Anita because she's femme and seems to be into women more because of abuse than anything else, so I contemplated maybe making her male counterpart a macho manly man so that he didn't seem 'gay' with Anthony...but then remembered that Anthony would NOT tolerate a level of testosterone anywhere near his own in the harem (much like Anita won't have any woman being 'more of a man' than she is!) and would probably instead claim it's 'not gay' because it's practically like fucking a woman, which also plays in with stereotypes about Asian men as effeminate and asexual just as Jade/Yiyu plays into stereotypes about the women as submissive, docile, etc. Yeah, I know, I thought too much about this.

Haha, as I said, I thought too much about this XD I'm just compulsively thorough so once I started Rule-63ing up the place I just couldn't stop. I think I got everyone in the series except for the random one-timer humans (Animators Inc clients, families of murder victims, etc) and cops that show up every book and the cops are really all the same people anyway. And a few vampire flunkies like Buzz, Winter, Janos, Kissa, etc.

Maybe he could have a beard and complain about how all women but the uniquely enlightened ones in his harem hates them? "Women hate beards" is an inaccurate stereotype in the same way as "men prefer blondes." It's not quite the same, because it raises the question of why he doesn't just shave if it bothers him so much - but then, Anita could technically dye her stupid hair, too, so maybe he just considers going bearded his personal style and anyone who doesn't find that style appealing is trying to change him and therefore persecuting him.
I think that option 2) probably fits the tone of condescending "friendship" Anita has with the police the best. Anthony cares sooooooo much and wants to save them from their own weakness and stupidity, and if they don't realise how much they owe him for sticking up for them, well, it's not like he's doing it for gratitude - though he'll still point out the lack of said gratitude to himself every five minutes. :P

Date: 2013-06-27 04:48 pm (UTC)Hmm, I don't know - it's a moderately big deal for me, but that's because I have it. ^_^; Mostly I was thinking that on TV all women hate beards, whereas in real life I have heard plenty say that a bit of well-tended facial hair is sexy (as for me personally, I have been told by one charming young lady that guys with beards are awesome because they look all intellectual while stroking them - and I have been told by another that, quote, "you look like a bear is eating your face." So clearly tastes differ wildly. ;) ). So it struck me as similar to blondness in women in that conventional wisdom says that one thing is popular but in reality different people like different things.
while I've heard guys say they think women prefer beefy, muscular men, most of the girls I know who've ever brought the matter up say they're into more slender types, so maybe he's one of those slender-but-fit'n'toned sorts and whines about girls wanting Hulked-out steroid-addled muscle-monsters while, of course, ladies constantly tell him how superior they find his physique?
